The Author
Anthony Shieh (pronounced /Shyeh/) is a Taiwanese-Filipino-Dutch novelist, author, and speaker. His works, including Verge, White Mocha Americano, and Death of a Loved One in the Time of Pandemic (Philippine Inquirer's Noteworthy Books of 2024) have gained attention. Shieh's writing has earned him recognition as a "Rising Author Redefining the Future of Literary Genres" by The Manila Times and as "a distinctive voice in modern Philippine literature" by CHiNOY TV.
Art has always been personal for Anthony—he sketches designs for each of his novels, making each story feel even closer to him. Growing up, he was inspired by children’s books like Nido Classic Tales From Around the World and The World’s Best Pocket Fairy Tales.
Trips to the supermarket with his mom were a highlight, where he’d look forward to grabbing the latest pamphlet tucked into Nido milk boxes. Books like these didn’t just feed his love for stories; they were a source of comfort during a challenging childhood and lit the spark that led him to write.
He consistently writes with a strong sense of inclusivity, ensuring that every character in his stories has the opportunity to be heard and understood. Through this approach, he champions the importance of representation, showing that everyone deserves a platform in literature to share their stories.
Horror movies have also had a huge influence. Classics like Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter and The Exorcist introduced him early on to the power of suspense and psychological fear, now core elements in his horror stories. Prom Night II, Poltergeist, and local films like Shake, Rattle, and Roll and Aswang opened his eyes to how horror can reflect real-life issues.
By 14, he’d completed his first horror novel. Since then, he’s continued to explore the genre, always hopeful that one day he’ll dust off those early stories and share them with the world. Looking ahead, Anthony’s excited to keep diving into the horror genre and hopes to inspire, engage, and maybe even terrify his readers with what’s to come.
