Mouths to Speak, Voices to Sing
Kenneth Yu
“Your request for a ghost story to share with our friends is apt and timely, it being near Halloween and all, but I'll go one better, if you don't mind.” - Time for Rest, Mouths to Speak, Voices to Sing
I feel incredibly fortunate to meet Kenneth Yu and to have had the opportunity to share a wonderful dinner with him and other great authors after the Haunted Reads event at The Podium. It’s one of those moments when the universe brings people together, leading to a new and exciting discovery. And now, after finishing his book Mouths to Speak, Voices to Sing, I’m left wowin’… what a ride! If you’re in the mood for a collection of short stories that straddle the line between the bizarre, the unsettling, and sometimes the beautiful, this is a book you’ll want to pick up at National Bookstore and Fullybooked. It’s a collection that contains stories that feel both deeply familiar and just a little... off.
Kenneth Yu’s writing style draws you in, creating a world where the everyday is twisted in ways that make you rethink the smallest details of life. There’s this constant tension between what is seen and what is unseen, between what is said and what is left unspoken. You never quite know if something supernatural is at play or if it’s just a reflection of the characters' inner turmoil. Another thing I loved about the collection is its exploration of human relationships. The stories explore how we communicate, or fail to communicate, with each other. It’s not just about technology and materialism; it’s also about the deep, unspoken connections we have with others.
Overall, Mouths to Speak, Voices to Sing is a book that invites you to linger. If you’re someone who loves stories that make you think long after you’ve read them, Mouths to Speak, Voices to Sing will stay with you, speaking and singing in your mind. It’s a book that challenges you to think deeply about the nature of human connection and the role of the things we accumulate in our lives... whether they’re objects, emotions, or memories.
