“But how can you kill something that is already dead?”

- Fresh Fruit for Rotting Corpses, Seek Ye Whore and Other Stories

I grew up watching Shake, Rattle, and Roll, always curious about the Filipino folklore each sequel brought to life. I can still remember those childhood evenings, huddled with my cousins in my grandmother's living room, watching the Magandang Gabi Bayan Horror Special as the sun set. Those memories always come flooding back, like how every ‘brown-out’ felt like a warning that something eerie was about to happen. That same unsettling thrill is exactly what I felt while reading “Seek Ye Whore and Other Stories.” I remember spotting this book in the bookstore and thinking, “Who in the world would write about seeking a whore?” It caught my attention. Then I saw the name “Yvette Tan” on the cover, and I told myself, “Anthony, It’s ‘the Yvette Tan,’ you need to read between the lines and listen to every word, tenderly.” The moment I started reading 'Siquijor' Ahhhh! I knew right away, “This is going to be intensely exciting.”

Indeed, Yvette Tan’s “Seek Ye Whore and Other Stories” is a brilliant collection that builds on her already impressive reputation in the realm of Filipino horror fiction. I see this book as the Old and New Testament of Yvette Tan’s horror history. Book 1, the Old Testament: Demon Summoning Made Easy, came before Seek Ye Whore and feels lighter. It taps into human curiosity about the forbidden but also throws in some humor—mixing eerie with the everyday. The end of Book 1 made me want to visit my favorite sisig spot in Gastambide. Who knows? They might have a Halloween special, maybe a Z-sig! Book 2, the New Testament, is the Advanced Demonology Booster Pack. It’s way darker, diving deep into human desires, obsessions, and the uncanny. This one’s more intense, bouncing between creepy sensuality, psychological tension, and full-on supernatural horror. It’s got that nightmare-worthy juice going on. As a fan of her work, I found “Seek Ye Whore and Other Stories” to be both haunting and deeply engaging, offering a fresh yet familiar dive into Filipino folklore and the darker aspects of the human experience which I adore. This book is a must-read for fans of horror literature and those interested in exploring the darker aspects of Filipino folklore and contemporary anxieties ‘cause this book truly cements her status as a Queen of Filipino Horror Stories.
