I come from a family where music has always been a significant part of our history. My grandfather, grandmother, father, and uncle were all in a band that performed at high-profile events in the 1970s, including at hotels in Ermita and various locations in Manila. They had a deep love for Jazz, which inspired my father throughout his work travels as a left-handed bass guitarist, a seaman and band leader for cruises. Music has been a defining element of his life, and I remember how he used to break down songs and write out detailed arrangements for each instrument. Play, stop, write, rewind, check, continue on his Walkman. Watching him write was such a cherished memory.

I could feel that passion while reading Philipp Inno’s “Bloc n’ Roll.” This book offers an electrifying blend of memoir and practical guide, diving deep into the world of rock music through the lens of an unconventional and passionate artist. Inno’s book offers a candid look at his journey through music, highlighting both the successes and struggles he encountered. His experiment in releasing 50 songs within a year is nothing short of impressive, and he shares this process in detail, from self-producing five albums to navigating the complexities of the music business.
