Same as the author, I started writing stories in grade school and finished my first novel in high school. Over time, I've felt a strong urge to keep writing, believing it's a gift I should share, and it is the right to do so. This feeling intensified after my mother's last wish for me to live my life, publish my work and share my words with the world. "Reign of the Broken Sword" by Johnny Ramirez is a debut novel that captivated me with its heartfelt exploration of identity and courage. From the lush lands of Tesnus to the continent of Esirnus, Ramirez's storytelling painted a vivid world that felt both magical and deeply human.

 

The protagonist, Zero, stands out not for his skill in battle but for his reluctance to harm—a trait that sets him apart from his fellow Tesnian Rangers. As he navigates the complexities of duty and personal conviction, Zero's journey becomes a transformative odyssey of self-discovery.

 

Using chapter titles reminiscent of song titles (or is it just me thinking it?,) Ramirez's storytelling approach introduced a rhythm that echoed Zero's journey, conjuring a sense of familiarity. The characters, from mysterious allies to tough adversaries, were crafted with depth that I found myself invested in their fates.

 

What struck me most was Ramirez's ability to blend magic and medieval-inspired settings, creating a world that felt both familiar and fantastical. The map art by Angel Perez further deepened the experience, helping the readers visualize the landscapes and locales that Zero traverses. The cover illustration by Bobooks captivated me with its nostalgic charm, reminiscent of the fable books I loved in elementary (The ones our class advisers insisted were mandatory purchases, much to the dismay of parents everywhere! :D) But I, for one, have a soft spot for those books!

 

As an author, Ramirez's storytelling is commendable and "Reign of the Broken Sword" is a testament to his talent and passion for crafting a good story, offering not just an escape into a world of magic and adventure but also a reflection on identity and the choices that define us. I eagerly await Johnny Ramirez's next literary journey.
